Nestle in & Draw Close is a design method for visual storytelling.
I love this word and it seems to be essential to how we live now. We are nestling in our homes and we are nestling into new routines. I also find myself nestling images in my artwork. I find great comfort in creating illustrations where the images and icons nestle together. It’s a bit meditative and very relaxing. Whether you are a professional illustrator or an amateur doodler I think this is a great design technique for visual storytelling.
Let’s get cozy and nestle in and draw close!
This design method works with any medium or art technique. You can use pencils, watercolors, cut paper, stencils, or work digitally. It’s all about how you design the page.
9 Steps to a Well Nestled Design!
Choose a theme. There are lots of theme ideas listed below.
Make a list of all the things you want to include in your drawing that support your theme.
Start by drawing one main icon. Place it in the middle area with lots of room to add more.
Draw outward from the main image and begin to add more images tucking them in as you go.
Be playful and creative with the scale of images. Make tiny things big and big things tiny.
Continue to add images. Use small icons, patterns or shapes to fill in odd spaces (like the raindrops).
Create a cohesive color palette. This will keep your design from looking too busy.
Finish your illustration!
